The Privacy Advantage: Why I Do Not Accept Insurance
Full Disclosure on the Insurance Model
To regular insurance companies, you are a diagnosis code. To authorize treatment, they require a formal mental health diagnosis that becomes a permanent part of your medical record. Furthermore, they retain the right to audit your private session notes and dictate the length, depth, and frequency of your care.
Out-of-Network Reimbursement
If you choose to utilize your out-of-network (OON) benefits, I can provide a monthly "Superbill" upon request for you to submit to your provider. Depending on your current health insurance provider or employee benefit plan, some services may be covered in full or in part.
To verify your benefits, call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask these exact questions:
Do I have out-of-network behavioral health benefits for outpatient, virtual sessions?
Do I have an out-of-network deductible, and has it been met yet?
Does my plan limit the amount of sessions I can have in a calendar year?
What is the allowable amount per session for billing codes 90837 (Individual) or 90847 (Couples)?
Cancellation Policy
I understand that unexpected events can happen, but in order to ensure that I can provide the best possible service to my clients, I ask that you please give me at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment.
A 50% fee of the current session fee will be applied for the first late cancellation or missed session.
For any additional missed or late cancellations, a 100% fee of the current session fee will be applied.
Good Faith Estimate
You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.
You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services.
Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule.
If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 800-985-3059.
